Joy Shokoya

Joy is one of the pioneer counselors at the Mirabel Centre, a sexual assault referral centre that has provided free medical and psychosocial, referral and support services to over 2000 survivors of sexual assault in Lagos State over the past 3 years.

For Joy, this is more than just a job, it is a fulfillment of a mandate to bind up the broken hearted, provide a safe haven of succor and support, and help survivors rise above the trauma of rape and sexual assault; to help lift the burden of shame and silence, to provide an accepting, non-judgmental and a strengthening atmosphere where survivors can rise from and get their power back. Beyond that is the need and burning desire to change attitudes and understanding, perceptions and deeply ingrained myths and misconceptions that inform how we as a society respond to issues of rape and sexual violence. This is what the Mirabel Centre stands for.

Joy is a Master’s Degree holder in Guidance Counselling from The University of Lagos and a graduate of Counseling Psychology from Delta State University, Abraka. She has previous experience working at a state rehabilitation centre for substance abuse and specialized training on Counseling and Psychosocial Support Services for survivors of sexual assault, from the St. Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Center Manchester, UK.
