As we end the first month of 2014 here are some African digital stats for 2014.
Internet penetration in Africa has seen a 5% growth in the past year and increases from 13% to 18%. This is in comparison to a global internet penetration of 35% making up 2.5 billion people. It should be noted that internet data from Africa is limited and hence the growth in internet penetration in Africa may be greater.
Despite the huge growth in mobile penetration in Africa the content still has the lowest mobile penetration in the world at 67% .
Mobile Broadband penetration in Africa is lagging behind the world at 7% but ahead of South Asia 4%.
Mobile broadband subscriptions in Africa have experienced huge growth and at 83 M is ahead of Central america 15M , South Asia 61M , Central Asia 18M, the Middle East 37M and Oceania 24M.
Social Media penetration in Africa also lags behind the rest of the world at 7% (tied with central Asia) ahead of Central Asia. This is primarily as a result of the lack of affordable, accesible internet on the continent. This represents a 2% increase from 2013.
Nigeria leads the way with the highest number of internet users , facebook users and active mobile subscriptions despite south Africa having higher internet, facebook and mobile penetration.
