Happy New Year, Social Media Week Lagos! In 2012, we were ecstatic that we had the opportunity to host Social Media Week’s first ever stop in an African city. We hit the ground running last year with a team of like-minded, passionate people across the Diaspora, and in February 2013, we will see our efforts come together to bring your an amazing week of discussion and community. I’ll toast to that!

Mr. President’s Promise for 2013: President Goodluck Jonathan addressed citizens at a New Year’s church service to reassure Nigerians that speedy progress will be made in 2013 in the government. “In all our key sectors of the economy, we have laid solid foundations and now we are moving ahead,” he said. “We will move very fast to make sure that what Nigerians expect from us as a government, we will do. Nollywood Actress Passes Away: Bisi Komolafe starred in many Yoruba-language Nollywood films. She died early January 1 in University College Hospital in Ibadan after being previously admitted to the hospital and treated for an undisclosed condition. Rest in peace, Bisi. Nigerian Newcomers Win Big at Kora Awards: Davido and Chidinma received recognition at the annual Kora Awards held in Ivory Coast. Davido won Best Male Newcomer and Chidinma won Best West African Female Act. Nigeria steadily produces quality talent that’s known the world over! Congrats to these two young artists!
